24 November 2016 | Panama, Boquete

Hola!

Nature can be weird and unpredictable. The last week it has shown me it's dangerous and destructive side. It started with my bus ride to Puerto Jiménez. It didn't run because of rock slides on the road. The alternative route showed me a crashed bus, a sick making boat trip and lots and lots of rain. But I arrived at Osa peninsula! However, I couldn't go anywhere. Roads were blocked by rockslides or wild rivers. The water rose so high nobody could cross rivers and roads, and rescue actions were set up. Puerto Jiménez was safe, but we couldn't go anywhere. The (they say) most amazing national park of Costa Rica (Corcovado) was closed. Two nights later boats were running again, and me and my newly met travel mate flied quickly to the main land.

Suddenly I was in Panama (and I can tell you now, border crossing is a lot more challenging than inside of Europe) a week earlier than planned. Boquete is an amazing village situated in the mountains of Panama. A less nice detail is that the bodies of the two Dutch girls, were found in the jungle of Boquete in 2014, 4 months after disappearing. Anyway, once in Boquete it became clear where the bad weather came from: Hurricane Otto is going to hit Latin America in a couple of days. The first hurricane ever in Costa Rica, and the first hurricane ever this late in the year.

In between the a quick summary of the intense differences between Panama and Costa Rica:
- the taxis are yellow instead of red
- the spoken language uses "tu" instead of "usted".
- women wearing traditional clothes really often. Read: colourful shapeless dresses.
- you pay the busses when leaving instead of entering.
And... That's it! (Till now).

In the first few days in Panama,Otto meant lots of rain. We drowned completely during our 30km night-hike to volcano Barú. Fog and rain was our reward at the top. However, the next day was wonderful and sunny: calm before the storm..? I had an amazing rock-climbing experience, with as guide a multiple Latin American champion. The hike to the lost waterfalls in the afternoon showed some amazing hidden natural wonders. Maybe I dó like the nature?

However, worrying about the hurricane isn't over yet. Busses and boats are not running. When will be the landfall? Where is it gonna hit? How bad is it gonna be? Will it be possible to go to Bocas del Torro in the coming days? I'll keep you guys up to date.

Hasta lluego!
